5 Easy Tips to Start Playing Pickleball

5 Easy Tips to Start Playing Pickleball

Pickleball is a sport that is quickly gaining popularity among people of all ages. This fast-paced game is a combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong and is played with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball. It's an easy game to learn, but mastering it takes practice and a few tips and tricks.

If you're starting out, don't worry! Here are five unbelievable tips I wish I had known when I started playing pickleball. These tips will help you improve your game, avoid common mistakes, and have more fun on the court.

Paddles are the first decision as you consider playing pickleball

1.     Pick Your Paddle

Finding the right paddle is very subjective, and there are many options to consider.  Weight, size, grip, and thickness, to name a few things.  Retailers like Just Paddles have a terrific selection and filters that help you narrow the choices.  Most retailers have generous trial and return policies, so be sure to understand those as you look for the right fit for you.

2.     Practice

Practice just like anything makes you better.  Getting out there and hitting some balls will help you refine some basic skills.  Focus on serving, volleying, and dinking, which is one of the most strategic shots in the game.  With time you’ll be able to control your serves and volleys, which will let you focus more on the game's strategy. Watching videos from trusted coaches is another way to increase your knowledge and practice habits. We recently featured Jordan Briones with Briones Pickleball on Pickleball University, check out this article to learn more about his coaching!

3.     Court Movement

Pickleball is a game of movement. You need to move quickly and efficiently to get to the ball and hit it back over the net. The key to good footwork is to stay on the balls of your feet and be ready to move in any direction. Be bold and take small steps to get in position.

4.     Playing Doubles

The most common play is doubles.  If you're playing doubles, communication is critical. You need to be able to communicate with your partner to avoid collisions and to make sure you're covering the court effectively. Use simple signals, like pointing to where you want your partner to go, to help you communicate on the court.

5.     Have Fun!

Finally, remember to have fun! Pickleball is a social game meant to be enjoyed with friends and family. Please don't take it too seriously, and enjoy your time on the court.

In conclusion, pickleball is a fun and exciting sport that anyone can play. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, these tips will help you improve your game and have fun at the same time.
