How is the DUPR Rating System Different? Plus Reviews from Pickleball Pros

Prior to DUPR, only certain tournaments had an effect on your rating. You can probably guess how this is a problem. If you don’t play in those select tournaments, your rating shows that you have never played pickleball. There is no data on you as a pickleball player. Now, if you are just playing in your driveway here and there… this might not be a problem. However, if you want to play at your local park, sign up for a league, or play in a tournament… this is a problem as you have no idea what your rating is or what level to sign up for.

DUPR takes away the guessing and sandbagging. I have seen many 4.5-5.0 players that have a 3.5 rating because none of their results counted towards their rating. Due to this, I have seen these players play at the 3.5 level in cash tournaments because according to their rating they are only a 3.5.

So… how does DUPR calculate your rating?

1.DUPR uses every point you score in a game.

Example: the final score of your game is 7-11, 11-9, 8-11

  • Other rating systems see “Loss”

  • DUPR sees that you scored 7 points in the first game, won the second game, then scored 8 points in the third game.

2. DUPR uses results from recreational play, leagues, sanctioned tournaments, non-sanctioned tournaments, etc.

Other rating systems only use sanctioned tournaments. With DUPR,  recreational game and a sanctioned tournament are weighted differently but every single point and game is used to create your rating

3. Win or Loss

This is the only step of the process for other rating systems… DUPR accounts for wins and losses but it's not the only data they enter.

Here’s what the pros have to say about DUPR:

“The DUPR rating system does not lose out on any information or data. They incorporate everything into their algorithm, making it the most accurate and effective method for ratings.”

– Ben Johns

“I enjoy teaching immensely, but it’s always difficult when people sign up for the wrong skill level clinic. They simply don’t know any better. I’m excited to have a way for your every day player to know where they stand so that they can learn and compete with people of their own skill level.”

– Zane Navratil

“I'm so excited that there is finally a framework to accurately measure skill level. Not only is DUPR accurate, but you no longer have to be a tournament player to be rated, making ratings more attainable than ever.”

– Corinne Carr

“I love DUPR because it’s a transparent rating system available to everyone! It’s adaptable so it will keep updating to ensure accuracy. Tournament and rec players can easily get their 4 digit rating and find compatible partners for play!”

“The DUPR rating system provides clubs and organizations with universal, real time ratings for it’s players. It is a rating based solely on the players results therefore making it extremely objective. Leagues, organized play, tournaments, and round robins can be easily run and monitored with DUPR.”

“Some people play their best games at tournaments and others play theirs in rec play. DUPR captures all that data to make sure your rating reflects what it should: Your game. This is a game changer for the sport of Pickleball.”
