Why Don't Pickleballers Know About This Device?

I spent yesterday doing some research on the best devices to video your pickleball game so you can improve your play. I even purchased the GoPro Hero 8 Black so I can video my play along with taping the professionals to see what they are doing when I attend tournaments. After I wrote this previous article, I decided to do a little more research and found a really interesting product by In Out.

It's a portable device developed originally to call lines for tennis matches. The site offers line devices to call the ball in or out and also a net device to record video and store statistics. In 2020, they modified the net device so it can accommodate pickleball, and they did the same for the line calling unit in 2021. Now I haven't heard of anyone using it for pickleball but I thought I would give it a try since it also records the video of your match and provides statistics so you can analyze shot placement. How cool is that?

I purchased the net device which records high definition video (1080p) including slow motion. There is a separate unit for calling lines which I did not buy since I'm really just interested in recording video and getting statistics. To use the net device for pickleball, I also had to purchase a stand as the unit needs to be four feet from the net post and 36 inches high. This is different than for tennis, as the device is attached to the net. I also purchased an extra battery just in case I need one, even though the website says the battery lasts for 90-120 minutes. Nonetheless, you do not have to rely on battery power, but on pickleball courts it can be a challenge to access power so I think the extra battery is the best bet.

The net device contains three cameras so it can record wide angle action on both sides of the court so it should cover the baseline, transition area, and kitchen. I am really interested in what statistics the net device provides but the website says it captures player position and shot type. I also saw it tracks percent of shots in and ball speed.
