Tyson McGuffin on Dinking Techniques

Professional pickleball pro Tyson McGuffin and Kyle McKenzie share helpful insights on taking dinks out of the air during a match in this incredible training video. They explain the tactics needed to hold your ground and make the play as effective as possible.

Top Dinking Techniques According to Tyson McGuffin

The main focus of pickleball is dinking. According to Tyson, players should focus on the following when dinking:

  • Alternate the types of dinks you hit so players are forced to alternate dinks back at you.

  • By engaging the wrist a small amount, the arm will naturally use the shoulder more.

  • Stay in a pickleball ready position with bent knees at the NVZ when dinking - try not to move too much and take few steps.

  • Use the shoulder more, and don’t focus as much on the wrist.

What Did Tyson McGuffin Do Before Pickleball?

Tyson McGuffin grew up in Washington and was a wrestler until he took up tennis at age 14. He was later a college tennis player and taught the sport as a tennis pro at the Yakima tennis club for six years. He enjoyed teaching tennis but found it frustrating because tennis skills tend to be quite complex and difficult to develop.

Pickleball offered an alternative to playing and teaching tennis, and once he started playing, he never looked back. His tennis skills translated well to pickleball, and he quickly found his stride, ranking after just three matches. His teaching skills have also come in handy, making him a household name that most picklers recognize due to his massive fan base and online presence.

What Pickleball Paddle Does Tyson McGuffin Use?

As a professional pickleball player, Tyson uses the Selkirk Vanguard Power Air Invikta paddle for both doubles and singles matches. He has used this paddle in the US Open and other Major League Pickleball tournaments.
