We've Got the Skinny on Pickleball Skinny Singles!

We’re talking about a variation of the game that has gained much attention in recent years. In this article, we will discuss what Skinny Singles is, how it's played, and provide some tips to help you understand and play this version of pickleball.

What is Skinny Singles?

Pickleball Skinny Singles is a singles game format where the court is reduced in width. Instead of using the entire width of a standard pickleball court, Skinny Singles uses only the middle third of the court. This creates a narrower court that requires more precise shots and strategic play. The game is typically played with the same rules and scoring as standard singles.

How to Play Pickleball Skinny Singles

Playing Pickleball Skinny Singles is similar to playing regular singles, but with a few key differences. Here are the basic rules:

Court Size

As mentioned, the court is reduced in width, with the court being 20 feet wide instead of the standard 44 feet wide, which means that you only play on one side or diagonally.

Skinny Singles can be played diagonally as well

Serving

The service is essentially the same as you do so from the backline, but this time, you be serving into the court directly in front of you, or if you’re playing diagonally, you’ll serve cross-court like usual.

Strategy

With the narrow court, players must be more strategic with their shots. Angles and placement become even more critical in this format.  But whether you’re playing on one side of the court or diagonally, this format makes you think about the strategic placement of your shots like 3rd shot drops, lobs, passing shots, and more.

One of the shots that most players struggle with is the 3rd shot drop

Scoring

The scoring system is the same as regular singles play, with games being played to 11 points.

Conclusion

Pickleball Skinny Singles is a fun and challenging game variation that requires precision and strategy. Skinny Singles is a great warm-up technique that prepares you for regular gameplay.  Try it next time you’re warming up, and watch the results when you team up with your doubles partner!
